It is powered to an AC outlet and there was an electrical problem. Since all the other speakers are connected to the receiver through the sub-woofer, I had no sound. I had to repackage the entire system, paying about $27.00 in freight to return it for a replacement, which I decided to do because I had good experience with JVC products in the past. I tried a Sony before that but myself, friends & family had trouble setting the menu choices so I brought that back. It did have great sound, but no S-Video which is unimaginable. This JVC is to replace my 9 year old 100 wt. per channel single receiver (no speakers either) that still worked, except for the remote.
